How-To-Rock-It: Color Blocking

Color blocking has been in for a while now, but it still remains a hard look to pull off.
Designer: Gucci
To pull off color blocking there are a few things that you need to remember: less is more, opposing or complementary colors, little texture. and harsh lines.

To explain, when I say "less is more" I mean that color blocking tends to look better when there are only a few different colors.

When there are too many different colors in your outfit, it looks much too busy. Stick to only having three different colors. If you do not want to have a full color blocking outfit, you can have one piece that is "pre-color blocked":

Another hard thing to know is what colors to wear when you are color blocking. You do not want your colors to be clashing, but sometimes that look can work for you if it is done right.
The orange and blue are not quite opposites, but are far apart.

When choosing colors, you either want colors in the same family(ex. pink and red), or you want them to be farther apart (ex. orange and purple)

Colors that are Farther Apart

When color blocking, it is better to wear less textured pieces. The texture in the outfit will just take away from the blocked affect of the outfit.

Harsh lines tend to look better when you are color blocking (blocks don't tend to be fuzzy). The harsh lines create distinct starts and ends to the colors. If you do want colors to fade, that is called ombré, and it is still super cute.

Summary:
1. Wear just a few different colors
2. Wear colors that are similar or are farther apart
3. Avoid texture unless it really works with the outfit
4. Have the colors have harsh lines in between them

Other tips:
1. Stick to a single type of colors like pastel or neon
2. Don't have more than one of a similar color if you are color blocking with opposite colors
3. Don't wear too much jewlery

Another Way To Wear Color Blocking:
Color blocking looks super cute when it is on your nails. You don't need to wear a color blocking outfit to rock these super cute nails. I recommend using opposite colors for nail color blocking, but you can use similar colors if you want.

There are different ways to wear color blocking on your nails. One of them is by having a bunch of different colors all on one nail.

To do this, use blue painters tape as a guide. Blue painters tape is less sticky than other kinds of tape. I'd you don't have any, you can use masking tape. Just remember to stick it onto the back of your hard first to make it less sticky. Then, like in the picture, draw lines in between the colors with a black nail polish with a thin brush.

Another way to color block your nails is to have a different color on each nail.

The last way to color block on your nails, is to color block french tips. I recommend using more similar colors for this look.

I hope you learned some stuff from this post! If you still can't get the hang of color blocking, just go with it anyway! It will be your own personal type of color blocking and will be your style.

XOXO
